Ipswich Slot Car Club

Club History and Activities

The First Portable Track The club was formed in 1976 by three experienced racers who moved into the area from London. A portable track with a lap length of 20 metres was erected, on each club night, in the function room of the Railway pub on Foxhall Road. This location was short lived and a number of church halls followed until a permanent home was found at Grimwade Memorial Hall, Fore Hamlet, in 1979. With sole use of the basement rooms the members were able to build a permanent track. The four-lane circuit had a lap length of 26.5 metres and was of chipboard and timber construction. To add character corners and straights were named after famous motor sport personalities and founder members of the club.

With the sale of the church hall, in 2002, for redevelopment into posh flats, the club was forced to move to new premises on the outskirts of Ipswich, in the village of Henley. The industrial unit at Walnut Tree Farm was initially shared with Serene Screens but this still gave scope for a major upgrade in track size and hence, speed.

In 2006 the club took over sole occupancy of the unit but it became increasingly obvious that the cost of the unit was eating into club reserves to the point that at that years AGM it was decided to look for a cheaper location. The Club secretary, Kevin, found our new home at a community centre in his home village just a short drive from Ipswich and the members are now in the process of rebuilding the track to fit its new home.

(see Club Contacts page for location).

Club nights are on Tuesday, from about 7.30 till 10.30 and annual championships are held for the four 1/32 scale BSCRA classes, Production, Formula 1, Saloon and Sports/GT and new for 2005, 1/24 scale Production. These classes are raced in rotation over a five week period.

As an encouragement to new members the 1/32 scale Production class is run using a handicap system which allows drivers of lesser ability and experience to compete on more equal terms with the club's top drivers. Also, a low cost Formula 1 class is raced on F1 nights which uses a Falcon motor as opposed to the much more expensive strap motors. This is proving very popular and has produced some very close racing.

Grimwade Hall Basement Track The more competitive club members also race at other meetings around the country and have gained great success in the British Open Championship and at the British Slot Car Racing Association Finals. The greatest success came in 2005 when a club team won the National Teamrace event after a number of second places in previous years. This success was repeated in 2006 and the National Trophy now has pride of place in the clubroom.

Newcomers are always welcome and are encouraged to race on their first visit using the clubs own cars and controllers.
