Ipswich Slot Car Club-News

2005 Annual General Meeting January2006
Secretary's Report
Apologies for missing a number of meetings this year, mostly beyond my control. However in spite of calls for my total retirement, I shall continue to support what I consider the very best club in the country.
Firstly a number of thanks this season go to certain individuals. To Gary and Nigel for copying with the complexities of the computerized race control and running most of the meetings with all of us looking on and moaning. I know it hasn't been that straight forward a lot of the time. A thank you to our other committee members, Tom for making sure we were all fed and watered. To Richard who is a great ambassador for the sport and who has to be one of the finest chassis builders the slot racing world has ever seen. To Nigel as Treasurer for continuing what he started all those long, long years ago and for giving us this excellent club. To my team mate Alan who has always been there for me and for the club and who has done afar better job as Comp Sec.
Also, thanks to all of you for supporting the club and especially the girls for racing with us in what is almost a male dominated hobby and doing very well at it, too.
A final thank you and congratulations to our Ipswich Team Race drivers who against all the odds managed a shockingly outstanding result to win the 2005 National Teamrace trophy.
Looking ahead, our Southern 32 round is confirmed as the 13th August 2006 and the combined Area 6 &10 area rounds start on 8th January at the Luton club.
Very best wishes to everyone who has raced with us this year and have a very good 2006.

Competition Secretary's Report
The 2005 season was an incredibly close affair, with four classes only decided in the last race.

In Saloon, Neil Obee started the season with two straight wins and a second for an early lead, but by mid season Richard Mack had got his new chassis sorted and put together a run of three wins and three seconds, to lead the title race, but Neil wasn’t finished winning the last three races to clinch the title by five points from Richard Mack with Tom 3rd.

F1 was just as close, again going down to the last race of the season. With Neil Obee not present, Richard Mack had to win the race to steal the title. Tom Snr made a real race of it, but Richard Mack won to clinch the title by one point – Tom’s efforts weren’t in vain however, he piped Chris Souter for 3rd place in the table.

Production was a bit more clear cut, with Chris Souter improving all season - nobody could live with him, as his handicap came down he just drove faster and faster, to win the title with ease. Other notable performances in Production were Gary Harvey with one win, two 2nd and two 3rd, he would have been closer to Chris if he hadn’t missed two rounds and Richard Mack who finished with two 1st, one 2nd and the track record from the last three rounds – not a bad finish.

Sports/GT was the closest finish of the season, Richard Mack needed to win to have any chance of beating Neil Obee to the title. It didn’t look good for him in the heats until his last run, when he put in a 35.64 to out qualify Neil by a lap and a half. He kept it going in the final to win with a 58.88 – 20 points in the bag but Neil was thirty parts behind for 19 points. Both had finished on 157 points, both had 5 wins but Neil Obee with four 2nd to Richard’s three took the title. Tom hung on to 3rd place from Chris Souter by one point. What a finish - it doesn’t come any closer!

1/24 - The new class was a great success, most people seemed to enjoy it, with close racing, overtaking on this tight track needed patience. Again the title went to the last race with Richard getting his revenge over Neil who finished 2nd with Chris a very close 3rd and a very impressive track record.

Other 2005 highlights – Juliette’s 2nd in Round 10 of Production with the help of Chris Souter’s tyres. She won final after final and would have won the ‘A’ had Richard Mack not chosen that moment to beat the long standing track record.
When Mags wasn’t stamping her feet on the Rostrum or throwing water over Chris, she managed some very good performances, notably Round 10 of 1/24. I couldn’t believe my eyes when she overtook Tom Garnham Snr (Ex National Champion) on the outside of turn two on her way to a PB and Heat win – well done.
In the Juniors, Tom continues to improve; he made huge progress with his Sports and Saloon cars. If I remember rightly, he had a good win at the Area Round, too.
Ben and Jack continue to entertain and had some fantastic results with their Sports cars. Round 9 saw Jack post a 32.70 PB with Ben close behind with a 31.49 beating much more experienced racers.
Although not a junior, Kevin is another one for the future, he is making rapid progress taking seven laps off his Sports PB in five races.
All the above have huge potential and should be encouraged because they are the future of the Club.

A new Club Champion is crowned

At last year’s A.G.M. I watched Chris Souter collect his ‘B’ GRADE trophy and thought that will be the last one for some time. How wrong I was! From ‘B’ GRADE, to ‘A’ final after ‘A’ final. In fact he was in 28 ‘A’ finals, winning 5, coming second in 13, 3rd in four and 4th in 6. He set two track records with his Falcon and 1/24 Production cars.
At the Ipswich Round of the S32 he won Production and the Team Race with Neil Obee and was unlucky not to get into the Super Production final; not bad for his first year as Main Grade, and a very worthy Club Champion.

Almost as good was Richard Mack with twenty 1st, nine 2nd and four 3rd finishing runner up, also beating the long standing Production track record. Richard made it a clean sweep at the S32 by winning the Super Production final. His season continued to get better with fantastic results at the Nationals, to become Ipswich’s 2nd Premier Grade Driver with Neil Obee. Then finally winning the National Team Championship with Neil, Paul and Mick. DOES IT GET ANY BETTER!
Tom Garnham Snr had a good solid season, too, beating Neil Obee for 3rd place in the Championship. For the first six months; he was swapping places with Chris Souter for the top spot – well done.

Finally, I would like to say it has been a real pleasure to race this year. The attitude from everyone at the Club has been fantastic, competitive but relaxed, win or lose, it has been fun. Thank you to everyone, but particularly to Nigel and Gary for the work done in getting the computer system up and running.
