The completion of the new track in May has meant the start of the delayed 2003 Club Championships and the first event to run, luckily, was Production. With the lack of grip, less serious with Production cars this was perhaps the best class to run first and an arbitrary handicap system meant the whole race was a bit of a lottery but very enjoyable.
The winner of the first race on the new track was John Davis, a very appropriate result as it was John's track design we built. The fact that he was responsible for setting the initial handicaps, we are all sure had no bearing on his success! What was required on the night was a steady 9 tenths driving style, which the more mature club members find comes naturally now! The following weekend, 15th June, we hosted our round in the very popular Southern Racing League series. This proved the quality of our labours with no track problems on race day and good reviews from the 33 participants. It really ran the track in with the level of grip improving as the day went on. Our concerns about pit space were also belayed by the excellent weather which meant an over flow pit area outside the club room was possible. The revenue from this event alone has helped offset the costs of building the track and our aim now is to boast membership to a level which will guarantee our continued survival.
