2003 National Teamrace
The BSCRA National Teamrace took place at Raceway UK, Wildfields on September 28th and the club was represented by two teams. The 'A' Team was the official one with club members Neil Obee, Richard Mack, Mick Thomson and Andy Smith while Ipswich'B' comprised Alan Humpreys and John Hyde joined by non members Brian Church and Kevin Doubleday.
The result was another win for the North London club, their twenty third! Forty five laps behind them was Trotters, a non-club team made up of drivers with a host of National titles to their credit and only 30 laps down on them Ipswich 'A'! This meant that of the official club teams Ipswich were second which equalled our previous best team result at the Reading Nationals in the eighties.
The 'B' team had a less successful time coming home in 11th place after some late race car troubles.
Well done to all the guys who raced so hard for the club. First place next year?
2003 Club AGM
This was the last meeting of 2003 and as is traditional was followed by the annual Silly Rally where members are actively encouraged to build illegal cars
The serious business first though. Financially the club moves into 2004 with an increase in rent so it was agreed to raise weekly fees by 35% with some positive action planned to increase membership numbers and hold other fund raising events. 'Corporate' racenights will be organised for local groups and the SRL will provided additional money. If we don't make the rent each week we don't have a club.
The Club Championships were closely fought in all classes and the intensity of the competition is proof of a good club atomosphere and the success of the new track. It is noticeable that we have regular visits from some of the country's top racers so we must be doing a good job.
Competition Secretary's report
Well that was 2003 race calendar, a tricky year for us all I think. We half expected that a change of venue would possibly be a good shot in the arm for us and it has proved to be the case. Thankfully the John Davis design is a good fast track with sweeping bends and a nasty little hairpin. It needs a level of skill that challenges the best. A number of national winners seem to like our track, too and Jamie Cleave and the Harwood brothers are testament to this.
Over the last six months nearly all of us have improved our lap times dramatically, proving that it takes a good bit of learning.
Because of the short season the results for the championship are very close. Where there are point ties, they are decided on the higher final placings.
A particular mention for our junior members Ben and Jack who both improved tremendously in this short season. Best novice performance by anyone for a long time has got to be by Chris Souter, who in his first season has finished 2nd in the B-Grade Championship and 5th overall.
Apologies for not having the PB board ready this season. It will be produced for next season, promise.
We have had really close fast racing this year, long may it continue
Best regards Jim
